SOPAKCO began as a small business in 1943 as part of the war effort. During its sixty+ years of business, SOPAKCO has grown and evolved in many ways.
SOPAKCO was founded in Greeneville, Tennessee in 1943 as Burns & Associates. Assembling rations required extensive warehousing capacity. The company began commercial warehousing in 1964 to take advantage of the warehousing space available during periods of low activity and the name was changed to Southern Packaging & Storage Company to reflect the new activities.
In 1965, due to the increased demands of the Viet Nam war, SOPAKCO moved its operations to Mullins, SC to take advantage of its proximity to coastal ports and the available labor force. This move brought Marnat Packing Company to SOPAKCO's attention as a supplier and in 1979 the company was purchased. 1981 saw the further addition of a second food processing facility in Mullins.

1986 saw several changes. Southern Packaging & Storage Company became SOPAKCO and the Edward Greene Research and Development Facility was dedicated. The name change reflected the evolution of SOPAKCO in becoming more flexible to its customers needs and that need predicated the development of a separate Research & Development facility. Construction began in 1985 and was in operation in January of 1986. This state of the art facility, with its staff of food scientists, has added the agility that is required to survive in today's market place.
For over sixty years, from the initial '200 Ration' and continuing through to the 'Meal, Ready-to-Eat', SOPAKCO has remained a constant and dynamic participant in both the military ration program and the packaging industries. With our continuing dedication to remain a leader in the industry and customer service, SOPAKCO will continue to provide a dynamic impact within the industry for the next sixty years.
