What is an MRE?
MRE is an abbreviation for Meal-Ready-to-Eat. The MRE is a shelf-stable, pre-cooked, packaged meal that is used by United States soldiers in the field. SOPAKCO Packaging is a producer of MREs and other types of military ration food items. For more information on the MRE please visit DSCP's web site. (Off-site link will open in new window.)
How is the food prepared?
The food is actually pumped or placed into flexible bags, vacuum sealed and cooked in large pressure-cookers called retorts. The food is fully cooked and can be eaten straight out of the bag - heated or unheated.
There have been reports that soldiers have devised ingenious ways of heating MREs - everything from heating water in their helmets to placing a pouch on an automobile manifold. Currently each MRE provided to the soldier has a Flameless Ration Heater (FRH) supplied to allow heating of the main entree.
Were can I purchase MREs?
MREs are manufactured with products that are government-furnished and are not owned by SOPAKCO Packaging. However, we do produce non-military rations to sell for public use. For more information, please visit Crown Point. (Off-site link will open in new window.)

How many meals are in a case?
MREs are currently produced in a Case "A" and a Case "B" and provided to the customer evenly. There are twelve (12) different meals in each case for 24 different menus , each containing approximately 1,200 calories. Each Case contains two different vegetarian menus. A full case weighs about 2 2 pounds.
What about preservatives and how do they last?
The product is packaged in special layered material to maintain freshness for a long period of time. Of course, SOPAKCO Packaging cannot guarantee an absolute shelf-life for its product because shelf-life depends on food components and temperature conditions. The average shelf-life is about 3-years. Please refer to the shelf-life table for more details.
